The GT Club of Jacksonville has had a scholarship program since the 1980s. Funding comes from the area’s 1100 Georgia Tech alumni each year. The Club also has two endowments in the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc. The first endowment is the Goldin-Verlander Scholarship started in the late 80s and named for Sid Goldin and Ash Verlander. The second endowment is the Charles N. Heston Scholarship started in the past decade. The Club also awards two additional scholarships named the Zell Family Scholarships. These scholarships are funded by the Zell family, a fourth generation Georgia Tech family (Carly, Don, Anne, David, Jesse and Sarah). Each of these scholarships are for $5000. Since the early 80s the Club has awarded almost $400,000 to help deserving Jacksonville area students attend Georgia Tech. All area students entering their freshman year can apply for these scholarships on line through the Georgia Tech Alumni Association in January/February each year. The Club Scholarship Committee will review all applicants and select winners in March each year and the winners are presented at the Club’s Spring Meeting. All inquiries can be made to Wade Barnes, MD by email at wb71gtjscholars@aol.com. Donations can be made to the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc. for the Georgia Tech Club of Jacksonville Scholarship Fund.
The Club’s Scholarship Committee also is active in the Georgia Tech President’s Scholarship Program (PSP). Over 5000 of the top applicants each year are selected by Georgia Tech to be applicants for the PSP. Over 700 of the top students are named as semi-finalists for this award. The Jacksonville Club Scholarship Committee interviews all of the semi-finalists from the Northeast Florida area. The number of semi-finalists ranges from 2 to 20 each year. Interviews take place in January. After the Jacksonville interviews, finalists are selected that are invited to Atlanta for a second round of interviews. Winners are selected in Atlanta to receive between $12,500 to $38,000 per year for their 4 years at Georgia Tech. Inquiries should be made to the Georgia Tech President’s Scholarship Program or to Wade Barnes, MD.
